The Nigerian Governor’s Forum, NGF under the Chairmanship of the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi will be leading other governors under the Forum to Sokoto State for a two- day retreat.
The retreat which will take off today is expected to have all state Governors in attendance. Among the 36 governors expected at the retreat is the Governor of Plateau state, Jonah Jang who had been at loggerheads with Ameachi over the leadership of the Forum.
It is however not clear whether Jang will honour Ameachi’s invitation for the retreat.
Recall that one of the conditions given to Jonathan and the PDP by the seven aggrieved governors, otherwise known as G7 is that Jang must relinquish power for Ameachi since he (Amaechi) won the last Governor’s Forum election.
The invitation letter which was signed by the Director-General, Asishana Okauru read, ” Re: Retreat for Nigerian Governors:
The letter further disclosed that, the retreat will have at its central “the Forensic examination of NNPC & FAAC; Leaving a sustainable legacy; Deepening democracy & federalism; Insecurity at the sub-national level; Constitutionalism, Rule of law &human rights. We have lined up a number of very excellent professionals to guide this process.”
Political observers have however said that the retreat will be used by the aggrieved governors to test waters on whether Jonathan and the PDP were serious with their move towards re-uniting the party. Others have however said that Amaechi and the other six governors may leverage on the absence of Jang’s faction to finally move to another political party.
According to Innocent Ejeh, a political analyst in Mararaba, Abuja, the meeting is to further strengthen relationship between some aggrieved governors of the People’s Democratic party, PDP and the opposition parties. He said ” You know Jang and his supporters will not attend the retreat. The meeting is going to be between the 7 aggrieved governors and the opposition parties, which may likely result into their exit.
