Agagu died 10 years after rumours of his death
He was confirmed dead by his younger brother, Mr. Femi Agagu who was also his Chief of Staff during his six years in office as governor of Ondo State before he was sacked by an Appeal Court in Benin, the Edo State Capital.
It was gathered that he slumped and died shortly after returning from a meeting yesterday (Friday) at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital.
It will be recalled that during the early months of Agagu as executive governor of the state in 2003, it was rumoured that he had died during his foreign trip to oversee after he was not seen performing his official duties for some months.
His Deputy, Otunba Omolade Oluwateru was in charge of the administration for some months.
However, the sudden return of the son of Iju-Odo in Okitipupa Local Government immediately cleared the air then on his death.
But, his Thursday return from United States of America could not stop him from death’s den this time around.
It could be re-called that after his dismissal from office, the incumbent governor Olusegun Mimiko was declared winner of the 2007 gubernatorial elections by the same court.
Thereafter, Agagu, who was also a former Deputy governor to former old Ondo State governor, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua returned to his based in Ibadan, immediately after he was sacked.
Agagu, who died at the age of 63, later contested for the Ondo Southern senatorial seat in 2011 general elections as the PDP candidate but was defeated by the serving senator, Boluwaji Kunlere.
He later teamed up with his party candidate for the last October 20, 2012 governorship, Chief Olusola Oke on attempt to unseat Mimiko, which was also failed.
He commenced his elementary education at St. Luke’s Anglican School, (now known as St. Paul’s Anglican School) Okitipupa, in 1954.
In January 1958, he moved to live with his cousin, Edward Fagbohun in Ibadan, where he continued his primary education at Ebenezer African Church School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan.
In 1959 he transferred to Kano, where he studied at the Ebenezer Methodist School and Baptist Primary School Sabon-Gari, Kano. He then moved back to Ebenezer African Church School, Ibadan where he completed his primary education in 1960.
Thereafter, he was in Ibadan Grammar School between January 1961 and 1967 where he passed his West African School Certificate and the High School Certificate examinations.
He was admitted to the University of Ibadan in 1968 to study Botany but later changed to Geology in which he graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Second Class Upper Division, in 1971.
As an undergraduate, his academic record was replete with laurels and prizes.
Agagu went to the University of Texas between 1973 and 1974 for his Masters degree in Geology.
Returning to Nigeria, he obtained a Ph.D degree in Petroleum Geology from the University of Ibadan in 1978. Agagu was appointed by President Olusegun Obasanjo as his first minister of Aviation in 1999.
Before becoming a minister, he was a former Deputy Governor to former governor of old Ondo State, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilu.
He contested the 1999 governorship election but lost to former governor Adebayo Adefarati before he was elected governor in 2003.
