Two in court over alleged theft of a pair of sandals valued at N2,000

Two men, Onyekachi Diwneye and Alex Tony, who allegedly dispossessed a man of a pair of sandals valued N2,000, were on Tuesday charged before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Diwneye and Tony, both aged 20, and residents of Ajegunle Area of Apapa, Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Cpl. John Iberedem, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 2 at 7:00 a.m.

He told the court that the duo entered one Mr John Kenneth’s room at No. 29, Fasasi St., Ajegunle, Lagos, and stole his pair of sandals valued N2, 000.

“Kenneth raised an alarm on seeing the strange visitors and his co-tenants, who came to his aid, helped in apprehending the accused,’’ Iberedem said.

The prosecutor said the accused were found with the stolen pair of sandals and handed over to the police.
Iberedem said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 285 of the Criminal law stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 409 prescribed two years for conspiracy.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr P. A. Adekomaiya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N10, 000 each, and one surety each in like sum.

Adekomaiya ordered the sureties to show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, as part of their bail conditions.

Further hearing in the case was fixed for Oct. 8.
