Governor Adams Oshiomhole apologizes over comments to a widow

Image
Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo today Friday November 29th apologized for the  comments  he made to a widow in Benin during an inspection tour on Mission Road, in the state capital, a fortnight ago. Oshiomhole said that he now regretted the comments which had become the subject of discourse in the social media. The Governor said that he made the comments in anger. The governor’s apology was made when the leadership of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), paid him a courtesy visit in Benin. Continue... He noted that though the challenge of modern times had bestowed on the shoulders of some women and single mothers the status of bread winners of their homes, such should not be used as an accuse to flout the laws. The Governor urged the Muslim women leaders to use their offices to propagate the essence of healthy living among children and women in the nation and the need to maintain proper sanitary conditions in their neighbourhoods. Oshiomhole lamented

HEARTLESS Oshiomhole: What Governor Adams Oshiomhole Said to a Poor Widow (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

Image
This can best be described as the most shocking remark ever made by a State Governor to a poor woman. The heart of a man who can say such things, especially in front of a huge crowd and cameras is desperately wicked. This video shows Governor Adams Oshiomhole ostensibly leading officials of the state to sanitize the city of Benin, the Edo State capital. In the course of his tour of duty, he came across a widow roadside hawker. The poor widow knelt before the imperial governor , a former labour leader, begging for her little means of livelihood to be saved. She pleaded that she’s a widow. But her pleas fell on the governor’s deaf ear. In what could be regarded as the most unkind cut of all, the governor said the widowed woman should “ go and die ”! Afterwards he stood for some seconds looking indifferently on how the officials took the women’s belongings away, and he left the scene of the drama. The huge crowd which witnessed all these was too shocked to say,

Asari Dokubo regains freedom, flown to Abuja

Image
Leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, who was arrested on Wednesday in Cotonou, Benin Republic, has finally regained his freedom. The ex-militant was freed after President Goodluck Jonathan personally contacted Beninoise President Yayi Boni, on his behalf. Festus Keyamo, a civil rights activist and personal attorney to Dokubo also confirmed his freedom. Insiders stated that President Jonathan deployed a jet to fly him to Abuja a few hours after his release. Recall that Festus Keyamo had earlier petitioned President Goodluck Jonathan on November 27, 2013, Wednesday, calling for his direct intervention in ensuring the freedom of the former militant. “We want to emphasis that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari, even though a Nigerian, carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now. In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country,” the letter s

APC set to storm INEC headquarters today

Image
The leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) is to stage a peaceful procession to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja today to register its disapproval of the Commission’s “string of failures” in the conduct of recent elections. The party cited the Delta Central Senatorial District by-election and the ‘inconclusive’ November 16 Anambra State governorship election to buttress its position on INEC’s shortcomings. In a statement on Wednesday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, APC vowed to proceed with the march to INEC headquarters, despite the move by police to stop it. ‘’We are doing this as a patriotic service to the nation because INEC as presently constituted is not capable of organising a free and fair election again in Nigeria. “If the Commission is not checked, its incompetence and conniving acts could plunge the country into chaos of unimaginable proportions,’’ th

Mixed reactions trail new tariffs on imported vehicles

Mixed reactions on Tuesday trailed the decision of the Federal Government to review the tariffs on imported vehicles from January 2014. The Lead Director, Centre for Social Justice, Mr Eze Onyekpere, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the new Federal Government’s Automotive policy was a positive step. Onyekpere said that the policy would encourage local industrialists, adding that the policy had a long-term trust of increasing the production capacity of local car manufacturing companies. NAN reports that the Federal Government on Monday released the details of new duties and levies payable on imported new and used vehicles. The Federal Government reviewed the new import tariff on cars to 70 per cent. A fully-built car would attract a duty of 35 per cent and a levy of another 35 per cent of the cost of the vehicle. Onyekpere said the idea was to encourage local contents, create jobs and create more avenues for the government to derive more reve

Governor Amaechi explains why he decided to join APC

Image
The Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi has said that he joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, with the aim of protecting the interest of Rivers people. Governor Amaechi also emphasized that Rivers State had suffered neglect under the Jonathan administration. He said part of the decision to join the APC was because the issues raised by G7 governors were not resolved by President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The Governor made this known to journalists at the Port Harcourt International Airport shortly on arrival from Abuja. He said: “Yes, we have joined APC after the meeting we had with Buhari, Tinubu and the interim Chairman of APC. “The governors met on Monday and decided that we must meet with the APC leadership and when we met with the APC leadership, it was important we took a position and the position we took is for the good of our democracy and to ensure that Nigeria moves forward. “We can’t

ASUU strike: Protest may be suspended within 24 hours

Image
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday put the weight of the ongoing strike on the Federal government as it said that the university strike would be called off 24 hours after the federal government accepts the new resolutions reached with President Goodluck Jonathan on November 4. Recall that the Union had conducted a referendum late last week, where 60 per cent of the lecturers voted for the re-opening of the shut schools. relatively, in a swift reaction to a statement credited to the Education Minister , Nyesom Wike, the Union said that Wike’s assertion that ASUU was making new outrageous demands was “untrue and absolute lie.” ASUU had avowed that it only asked the president to ensure that the resolution reached at the meeting was endorsed and signed by a reputable government official, preferably, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and would object to having a permanent secretary sign the agreement. ASUU s

Asari Dokubo arrested in Benin Republic

Image
Just got a press release from lawyer Festus Keyamo explaining that his friend and client, ex-militant Asari Dokubo was arrested in Benin Republic today. Read the press release below... T oday, Tuesday, November 26, 2013, my friend and client, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, around the hours of 1:00pm and 2:00pm by the country’s gendarmes (Police Force). He was picked up around the Lubeleyi roundabout and taken to an unknown destination. We want to emphasise that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now. In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country. All these places have been searched as at this evening and nothing incriminating was found. We think his arrest and detention is a ploy by certain forces in Nigeria in unholy alliance with the Beninoise government to keep him away as 2015 approaches. We call on the Nigerian government to im

Mixed Reactions Trail New PDP, APC Merger

Image
Nigerian lawmakers have made diverse comments on the merger of the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) and the All Progressives Alliance (APC), a development expected to generated unexpected debates related to its consequences in the plenaries of the upper and lower chambers. The merger will be a source of worry for lawmakers, as they will have to consider the legal implications if they decide to move with the governors of the states they represent. The law may not have implications on the governor but on a lawmaker, the individual stands a possibility of losing his seat. After the declaration of the merger on Tuesday by the chairman of the defunct nPDP, Mr. Kawu Baraje, some lawmakers hailed the decision, describing it as “the best decision the aggrieved group of governors should take”. Lawmakers, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party the governors broke away from, insisted that the merger would not in any way af

ASUU strike: Chancellors order lecturers to return to class

Image
The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities had on Tuesday called for the immediate re-opening of all universities currently shutdown across the nation. This directive was handed down to the protesting lecturers in a communiqué signed by the Committee’s Chairman, Prof. Kimse Okoko, and released to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday. This resolution became prominent its Committee meeting held to discuss issues relating to the ongoing strike. According to the group, the call for the re-opening of the universities was unanimously agreed by all Pro-chancellors in the interest of the education sector and the country at large. It also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the referendum conducted in all the branches of ASUU nationwide, which voted 60-40 in favour of the suspension of the ongoing strike. The statement further explained that the Committee’s decision was based on the negative impact the strike had created on th

Police says gunmen attacked Stella Oduah; Nigerians question integrity of story

Image
The FCT Police Command on Monday in Abuja confirmed that gunmen fired shots at the car of the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah in Abuja. A Police Public Relations Officer, Altine Daniel, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Friday, adding that the Minister was not in the car when the incident happened. Ms. Daniel, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, however, said that the incident was reported to the police Monday evening at about 5:30 p.m. Curiously, the news was never reported in the media, before yesterday’s confirmation by the Force. Since the agency broke the news, DailyPost has observed disbelief from many Nigerians, who believe an attack on such a high-ranking Federal Government official should have made headlines Saturday morning. But the police is claiming that some metal objects were found in the vehicle which do not look like the conventional bullet. “The objects will be subjected to ballistic test,

We have returned the $700m Abacha looted to Nigerian government – Swiss envoy

Image
The Government of Switzerland has disclosed that it had returned to the Nigerian government about $700m looted by late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha. Switzerland Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Hans-Rudolf Hodel, made this known in Abuja recently at a press briefing ahead of a two-day seminar on Anti Money Laundering and Combating Financing of Terrorism. The envoy asserted that the Swiss government was ready to reopen the case if Nigerian government presents concrete evidence of any other money still being held in any Swiss bank, noting that Switzerland had no interest in withholding illicit funds. He said his country had returned about $1.7bn to their countries of origin in the last 15 years. “Switzerland and Nigeria agreed to request the World Bank to participate in the review of the use of funds, in the framework of a budget control process of various welfare projects,” he said. He disclosed that his country was yet to r

Nigeria may break up after 2015 – Ngige

Image
The political rumblings in the country in recent times have been eliciting dire forecasts, particularly with regards to the 2015 general election. Some of the gloomy forecasts while largely indicating turbulent times ahead, further reinforced the American prediction of the disintegration of Nigeria in 2015. Yesterday, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Chief Emeka Ngige, added his voice to the hubbub when he declared that there may not be Nigeria after 2015. According to Ngige, “Nigeria should be ready to accept the US prediction that the country would disintegrate in 2015 going by the seeming outcome of Anambra governorship election”. Ngige was reacting to the irregularities that marred the Nov 16 Anambra State governorship elections, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared inconclusive. The legal icon further declared that, “INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega has admitted that he failed in Anambra. It

Ali Adoyi: ASUU strike – Unionism or cultism?

With all the clandestine and nocturnal meetings, it has become expedient to swiftly ask whether the ongoing ASUU strike is been championed by a Union with the genuine interest of the education sector or a cult organization aimed at playing politics of some sort. This is so because, the endless midnight meetings that are always kept secret calls for serious concern. I’m not too sure which to believe as the double facet nature of ASUU continues to baffle me, even as it continues to give some of us nightmare. It is indeed nightmarish to see ASUU playing the devil’s advocate in the ongoing ‘war’. ASUU appears to some students and other well meaning individuals as a body trying to protect public interest as it relates to the future of our children, meanwhile, it tends to destroy completely the amorphous, yet manageable academic system in the country. But the incontrovertible assertion is that you don’t demolish the hut you live in, when you are still in the process of put

Amaechi loses Obio-Akpor case

Image
A Rivers State High Court has ordered the state government to reinstate the suspended Chairman, Timothy Nsirim, and councilors of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. Justice Iyayi Lamikanra gave the order on Monday in her judgment on the suit filled by Timothy Nsirim, challenging his suspension by the Rivers State House of Assembly in April 2013. Justice Lamikanra in her judgment said the suspension of Nsirim was illegal and unconstitutional. While making reference to section 7 sub (1) of the 1999 constitution as amended and section 64 of the Rivers State Local Government Law, the Judge said Governor Rotimi Amaechi lacked the right to appoint a caretaker committee when the Chairman of a council was unlawfully suspended. Justice Lamikanra also ordered that the sum of N50,000 be paid to each of the claimants for inconveniences. She, however, urged the defendants to approach the Appeal court if they so wished. In a reaction, the Rivers Stat

Minister blames terrorism, prostitution, child trafficking on poor quality of education

Image
Nigeria’s overseeing minister of education, Mr. Nyesome Wike has blamed problems of terrorism, prostitution and child trafficking in the country on poor quality education. Wike said this on Saturday at the 5th convocation ceremony of the Federal College of Education Eha-Amufu, Enugu State. He urged stakeholders in the education sector to focus attention on key areas such as quality education, creative and innovative schemes that could attract and retain bright brains in the teaching profession. “I urge those of us in the teacher sector to focus attention on key areas that would improve quality of education in the country. “I believe Nigeria would one day become a modern-day miracle like Ghana in Africa and China in Asia continent. Nigeria’s current challenges could be substantially reversed through quality education”, he said. The minister who was represented by a senior staff in the ministry, Rev Chris Ugorji commended the college pro

Beware of people like Akpabio – Nyako cautions Jonathan

Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako has warned President Goodluck Jonathan to beware of people of his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Godswill Akpabio. Nyako was referring to comments Akpabio made on Monday at the launch of the third phase of the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN) programme by President Goodluck Jonathan at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. Akpabio, who apparently was referring to the aggrieved governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said, “I believe that you cannot be a good leader unless you’re a good follower and I believe also strongly that leadership comes from God. “So the question of rebelling against leadership does not occur because if I rebel against the leadership at the federal level, I should expect somebody also to rebel against my leadership at the state level, maybe from my own local government or thereabouts. “And it is expected that as a governor of a state, I should be expected to respect the p

BREAKING NEWS: APC merges with New PDP

Image
The Abubakar Baraje-led faction of the New Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP, has finally merged with the All Progressives Congress, APC. This was made known at the end of a meeting held at the Kano Governors Lodge in Abuja on Tuesday. A statement signed by the Interim Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, said the party welcomes the defectors with open arms. Mr. Baraje read the terse communique to journalists at about 11.46 a.m. The merger means that the APC now has its 11 governors joining the seven decamped governors who were former members of the New PDP; bringing the total of the party governors to 18. The statement which was signed by Baraje reads in parts: “In the interest of our country and in order to rescue Nigeria, we the new PDP have agreed to merge and work with the APC.” In attendance at the meeting were APC leaders, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Muhammed Buhari, the governors of Niger, Rivers, Kano and Kwara states, Babangi

Why Iyanya Was Chased from Davido's Birthday Party In Lagos

Image
For someone like Iyanya to be chased away by Davido's bouncers from the entrance gate of his birthday party at the Pavada Lounge, is to the say the least very unfortunate. Although many regular people who did not have an invitation card were also prevented from entering but Iyanya should be an exception. It's things like this that cause beefing in the entertainment industry. I hear Iyanya even tried to call Davido and his guys to let them know that he was at the gate, but they didn't take his call... After several failed efforts to convince the fierce-looking bouncers that Iyanya is not just any other person but also a big player in the music industry, those around gave up and Iyanya had to walk back to his car in shame and he regretted ever leaving his house to go to Davido's birthday party venue. Some people are saying it is a "deliberate act" to insult Iyanya. Whatever, I hope Davido apologizes to him.

2015: Don urges INEC to reappraise logistics

Image
Prof. Victor Ekhator of the Public Administration Department, University of Abuja, on Thursday urged INEC to reappraise its plans toward the 2015 elections, to enable it to deliver on its mandate. Ekhator told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that INEC needed to take the necessary steps to conduct free, fair and credible polls. “INEC needs to deploy more logistics, employ experts, improve on its voter registration process and ensure that it utilises knowledgeable and capable ad hoc staff during elections, “ he said. According to him, such experts can help to “plan, design, organise and coordinate men and material resources to assist INEC organise improved elections”. Ekhator said: “It is expedient on INEC to reappraise its logistics toward the 2015 elections.” This, he said, became necessary against the backdrop of the inconclusive Nov.16, Anambra governorship polls. He also called on the electoral body to do more on publicit

Anambra guber fallout: Governor Obi behind election crisis – Arthur Eze

Image
Elder statesman and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State, Chief Arthur Eze, yesterday flayed Governor Peter Obi over the inconclusive governorship election in the state. Eze, who is seen as the pillar behind the PDP candidate, Tony Nwoye, alleged that the problem with the election was the insistence of the governor to install “his treasurer,” Williams Obiano, as his successor. Eze told State House correspondents shortly after meeting with the nation’s Vice-President, Namadi Sambo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja that, having ruled the state for eight years, Obi was bent at imposing his candidate on the state for another eight years. Asked whether he was in support of the call for total cancellation of the election, the PDP chief said, “Jega is very emotional, he is a very straightforward human being. He said this election was an act of sabotage. He was frank and God will advise him on what to do.” On the way

Zoning of political offices does not produce good leaders – Tambuwal

Image
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has kicked against the zoning of political offices among different regions of the country, saying that the idea is a threat to good governance. Tambuwal made this remark in Lagos on Thursday, while speaking at the 5th Nigerian Leadership Conference under the theme “The Christopher Kolade Symposium.’’ According to him, the practice is encouraging the emergence of mediocre leadership. He noted that the choice of those who should occupy leadership positions should be determined by people’s will. The speaker who was represented by the House Minority Leader, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, added that zoning was a form of imposition of leadership. He said, “Honestly, this idea of turn-by-turn arrangement in the holding of political offices does not produce the best leaders. “Rotation of the Senate President’s seat, Office of the Governor or the zoning the Office of the Presi

Anambra guber: APC asks Jonathan to ensure free, fair election

Image
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to live up to his promise of a free and fair election in Anambra State on Saturday, saying the President must be believable at all times. In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said nothing on ground in Anambra so far points to the fact that Saturday’s election will be free, fair and transparent, despite the President’s promise. “Rightly or wrongly in our country, institutions of state take a cue from the President’s body language. They know that members of the ruling PDP who engaged in electoral malfeasance and brigandage during last month’s Delta Central Senatorial election were not punished. “They know that security agencies that turned themselves to the armed wing of the PDP were not sanctioned. In this context, therefore, the President’s promise of a free and fair election will not mean much to those bent on repeating same

Amaechi leads Nigerian Governors to Sokoto

Image
The Nigerian Governor’s Forum, NGF under the Chairmanship of the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi will be leading other governors under the Forum to Sokoto State for a two- day retreat. The retreat which will take off today is expected to have all state Governors in attendance. Among the 36 governors expected at the retreat is the Governor of Plateau state, Jonah Jang who had been at loggerheads with Ameachi over the leadership of the Forum. It is however not clear whether Jang will honour Ameachi’s invitation for the retreat. Recall that one of the conditions given to Jonathan and the PDP by the seven aggrieved governors, otherwise known as G7 is that Jang must relinquish power for Ameachi since he (Amaechi) won the last Governor’s Forum election. The invitation letter which was signed by the Director-General, Asishana Okauru read, ” Re: Retreat for Nigerian Governors: “You are kindly invited to attend a 2-day Retreat for the 36 Governors to be hosted by the Soko

Nigeria lauds US designation of Boko Haram, Ansaru as terrorist organisations

Image
The Federal Government has expressed joy over the declaration by the United States of America, that Boko Haram and Ansaru sects are terrorist organizations. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke in a chat with newsmen last night in Abuja, said the US decision will “help in strengthening the proscription of Boko Haram by the Federal Government. According to him, “The US stance is a welcome development; we salute the US Government for partnering with the Federal Government to root out terrorism. “This step will assist this nation to deal with these renegades. It will also help in strengthening the proscription of Boko Haram by the Federal Government.” He urged other world powers to emulate the US Government to check terrorism in any part of the world, adding that “a threat to any nation by the insurgents is a threat to global peace.” The US State Department had explained that “These designations are an important and appropriate
