Jonathan seeks NASS approval for extension of emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno, Yobe

President Goodluck Jonathan has forwarded a request seeking the approval of the National Assembly for an extension of emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe beginning from Nov. 12, 2013.

Jonathan’s request is contained in a letter to the Senate President Sen. David Mark, and read on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.

He said the request was necessary to provide more time for the security agencies to address some of the security challenges still existing in the affected areas.

He said that the approval of a further six months extension of the emergency rule was “pertinent ” because it was expected that normalcy would have been fully restored within the period.

“As a result of the laudable efforts of our security agencies and the support of citizens in the affected areas, we have achieved considerable success in containing the activities of the terrorist elements.

“However, some security challenges still exist in a few parts,” Jonathan stated.

Jonathan said: “In view of the foregoing, I most respectfully request the National Assembly to consider and approve by resolution the extension of the Proclamation of the State of Emergency by a further six months with effect from Nov. 12, 2013.”

We are not part of Lagos APC – APGA

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Lagos, has dissociated itself from the state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC). It also warned members not to romance any other political party, saying such act would attract sanctions. The party in a statement issued and signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Sanjo Olawuyi, on Wednesday, said the Lagos State Chapter of APGA, under the leadership of Edwin Izuchukwu, is not in any alliance with the newly registered APC, stressing that it has total confidence in the leadership of Victor Umeh, National Chairman of the party. ASUU strike update: Don’t send your children to school, we won’t teach them – Lecturers warn parents

The battle between the Federal Government and the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has attained a new intensity following a 7-day ultimatum issued by the Presidency. Some of the striking lecturers have remained adamant despite the obvious waning in the resolve of their members evidenced by the withdrawing of some universities from the strike. The academic body has taken things even further by warning parents not to allow their wards resume in schools to avoid risking the lives of their children.
