All is now set for the final journey of Nigeria’s First Lady’s mother, Madam Charity Fyneface Oba, whose demise occurred on July 22, 2013. To give befitting funeral rites to his mother-in-law, the President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is expected in Port Harcourt for the burial. The burial activities, which will commence today (Thursday), with a service of songs at the Port Harcourt Polo Club, GRA Phase 2, will be rounded off on Friday, November 1, 2013, with funeral service at the National Field, Okrika, followed by interment at her husband’s compound at Ambemembiri, Okrika, and reception later for guests at the palace of His Royal Highness, Late Sir S. The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) on Wednesday said that the Federal Ministry of Finance granted a waiver of N10.1 million to Coscharis Motors for the purchase of the two BMW cars by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The NCS told the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation investigating the alleged importation of the cars by the NCAA for the Minister of Aviation Ms Stella Oduah that the said waiver was to import 300 vehicles, including the controversial two BMW cars. Representative of the Comptroller-General of the NCS, Mr Manasseh Jatau, a Deputy Comptroller of Customs, disclosed this in his presentation at the public hearing of the case on Wednesday in Abuja. He said the point of entry of the cars was Tincan Port in Lagos, adding that no import duty was collected from the owner of the goods (Coscharis Motors) as a one-year duty waiver for 300 cars was granted in the name of the company for importation of cars for Eko 2012 Games in Lagos. Some Protesters had on Wednesday demanded that the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah be properly investigated, tried and jailed if found guilty with regard to the alleged N255M car scandal. The group made this request when they marched to the Lagos Office of the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC. The protesters, at about 10:15am stormed the ICPC office, resisted police confrontation and forced their way into the ICPC office premises. The Director-General of Budget Office of the Federation, Dr. Bright Okogu, and the Accountant- General of the Federation, Mr. Jonah Otunla, Tuesday told a National Assembly Committee that Nigeria was not broke, but was currently experiencing cash flow problem. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation on Thursday to brief the members on the controversial purchase of the N255m bullet-proof cars for Ms Stella Oduah, saying that the Aviation Ministry approved the transaction before it was carried out. It also affirmed strongly that the Agency did not default in the transaction. The Director of Aerodrome in the NCAA, Mr. Joyce Nkem-Akonam, disclosed this in a confrontational hearing of the Aviation committee’s public sitting in Abuja. Nkem-Akonam, the acting Managing Director of the NCAA who handled the transaction had in his defence told the Committee members that since “Leased financing, not direct financing, was adopted to procure the vehicles,” the agency did not default in any way. The House of Representatives, Thursday said that it was ready to approve a supplementary budget so that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, could call off its ongoing strike. Super Eagles’ Head Coach Stephen Keshi on Wednesday described the seven-month salaries being owed him by the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) as “the lowest point’’ of his coaching career. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that it may soon declare solidarity strike in support of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). NLC President, Abdulwahed Omar, gave this hint on Wednesday in a communique issued at the end of a National Executive Council (NEC). According to him, if all efforts at resolving the industrial crisis fails, the NLC would then be left with no choice than to join the strike. The police have arrested the Executive Director, Anti-Corruption Network, Dino Melaye, for calling for the sack of the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, over the purchase of two BMW armoured cars. Ms. Oduah allegedly compelled the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to buy her two bullet-proof BMW cars, worth $1.6m (about N255m). Dino led a group of protesters to the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, just before noon. However, there was a hilarious drama at the scene of the protest as another group emerged from nowhere, protesting in favour of the Minister, and to counter the protest staged by the Dino’s group. The police led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Sunday Olukoya, reportedly allowed the pro-Oduah protesters to leave, but stopped the bus conveying Melaye supporters, declaring that they were under arrest. The Federal Government has dismissed media reports that there’s a hidden agenda behind the proposed national conference. Information Minister, Labaran Maku, made this assertion on Tuesday in Abuja, during the monthly world News Conference, aimed at assessing the performance of the nation’s economy. President Goodluck Jonathan has set up a three-man administrative panel to probe the purchase of N255million BMW armoured cars acquired by the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, made the disclosure after the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) Ms. Oduah was absent at the meeting. Aggrieved family members of the late Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu have accused Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, wife of the late Ikemba of being unnecessarily greedy by claiming almost all the assets of the deceased. In a statement of defence presented before a Lagos High Court, Igbosere, the Ojukwu Transport Limited and seven other family members had asked Bianca to present concrete proofs regarding her claims in the suit which she filed on behalf of her little children in an effort to secure for them their father’s assets.
