PDP crisis: We are determined to resolve our differences – Mantu

A former Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ibrahim Mantu, on Thursday expressed determination of elders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to resolve the lingering crisis in the party amicably.

Mantu gave the assurance at the inauguration of Council of Elders of Goodluck Support Group (GSG), an NGO, in support of President Goodluck Jonathan‘s Transformation Agenda in Abuja.

He said disagreement between people of similar or same ideology in a democratic setting was a tradition adding, “ we will continue to remain one united party.”

He noted that the role of the council was to advise and guide the group in advancing and promoting the achievements of President Jonathan, since 2010 and chart a way forward.

Mantu assured Nigerians of the readiness of the PDP to satisfy the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.

“ We are fully aware that it is not going to be business as usual, because we have never had a serious opposition party that can be an alternative to the PDP before.

“ We are beginning to see the opposition putting their house together now, so we have a lot of work to do,” Mantu said.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs and National Coordinator of the group, Ahmed Gulak, said the group was not particular about 2015 but progress and development of Nigeria.

Gulak said the group had been in existence since 2010, and had contributed immensely to the unity of the country as well as enlightened Nigerians on the programmes of the present administration.

“ We have been working at the grassroots to enlighten Nigerians on the significance of peace in the country.
The presidential aide said the council would serve as a custodian of the group, considering their wealth of experience in all facets of human endeavour.

Gulak said the PDP was not threatened by the emergence of All Progressive Congress (APC), adding its emergence would make the political space more competitive in the country.

“ I am among those that have encouraged the smaller parties to come together and form a national party like the PDP, so that our democracy can develop,” he said.

On the recent sacking of some members of the president’s cabinet, Gulak said it had nothing to do with the PDP crisis.

According to him, it is the prerogative of the president to hire and fire any minister whenever and where ever he feels so.

“ This administration has allowed some ministers to stay for more than two years, we have had previous administrations that had been changing ministers every six months,” Gulak said. (NAN)
