Second Niger Bridge Commencement Ceremony To Hold March 10

The Nigerian government will on March 10 perform the ground breaking ceremony for the second Niger Bridge.
 
President Jonathan told a delegation of Anambra State citizens, who were in the presidential villa on a courtesy visit on Tuesday that the work on the bridge would begin immediately after the ceremony in fulfillment of his campaign promise before he became the president in 2011.

The Anambra citizens came in the company of the outgoing governor, Peter Obi, whose tenure will expire on the March 17.

They thanked the Federal Government for the planned flag-off of the second Niger Bridge project, pledging their support for the government to ensure that the bridge is completed within the stipulated time.
President Jonathan paid glowing tribute to Governor Obi, saying that acrimony between governors and the president does not help in the development of any state.

He commended the governor for demonstrating clearly that he was a good person, citing examples of how he was able to manage a House of Assembly that was predominantly controlled by an opposing political party and his contributions to the economic management team.

The group thanked the president for his support to the outgoing governor and urged the president to extend the same support to the incoming governor Mr Willie Obiano.

The first Niger Bridge was built in 1965 and cost £5 million. The increasing vehicular movement had triggered the need for a second bridge to ease the pressure on the old bridge and at the same time create free movement of vehicles into the commercial city of Onitsha.

We are not part of Lagos APC – APGA

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Lagos, has dissociated itself from the state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC). It also warned members not to romance any other political party, saying such act would attract sanctions. The party in a statement issued and signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Sanjo Olawuyi, on Wednesday, said the Lagos State Chapter of APGA, under the leadership of Edwin Izuchukwu, is not in any alliance with the newly registered APC, stressing that it has total confidence in the leadership of Victor Umeh, National Chairman of the party. APGA further announced that it has suspended three members of the fold with immediate effect for defecting to the APC. ASUU strike update: Don’t send your children to school, we won’t teach them – Lecturers warn parents

The battle between the Federal Government and the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has attained a new intensity following a 7-day ultimatum issued by the Presidency. Some of the striking lecturers have remained adamant despite the obvious waning in the resolve of their members evidenced by the withdrawing of some universities from the strike. The academic body has taken things even further by warning parents not to allow their wards resume in schools to avoid risking the lives of their children. Vanguard  reports : The Presidency, on its part accused ASUU leaders of treachery and warned the university lecturers not to dare the resolve of government to carry out its threat to sack them if they failed to resume.
