Jonathan meets with two aggrieved PDP governors

cffa53a92920b2cb65b7d8a86a60ca2aPresident Goodluck Jonathan late on Sunday night met with Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger and Gov. Sule Lamido of Jigawa to resolve the lingering crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Aliyu and Lamido are the only two of the seven aggrieved PDP governors yet to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC) party.
The other five governors who were part of the announced merger with APC last week include Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, Gov. Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara, Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano and Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State.
Addressing State House correspondents after the President’s meeting Aliyu and Lamido, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, said the party was moving forward to restore confidence and trust.
He said there would be series of meetings in the week to resolve the crisis in the party.
“We have had our meeting presided over by the President with the Vice President in attendance.
“We had very useful meeting and the summary of it all is that we are happy that we are moving to restore confidence and trust,’’ he said.
“I am a member of the PDP and that is why I am here at this meeting.
“As I said before, the whole idea is to bring sanity back to our party and that is what we are still discussing.
“We are meeting again because there will be series of meetings.’’
Lamido, who spoke in the same vein, said he would stand by his principles of a united Nigeria.
“I stand by my principles which is one Nigeria which is based on law and order.’’
Some governors who attended the meeting were Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Liyel Imoke of Cross River and Idris Wada of Kogi.
NAN reports that earlier, Vice President Namadi Sambo and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Ayim Pius Anyim, had held a private closed door consultation with some PDP governors.
The consultation was held at a different venue, House Seven, also in the Presidential Villa.
Details of that meeting were, however, not disclosed to newsmen.
Governors present at that meeting include Akpabio, Imoke, Wada, Martins Elechi of Ebonyi, Sullivan Chime of Enugu and Jonah Jang of Plateau.
Also at that meeting were Gov. Ibrahim Shema of Katsina, Gov. Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia, Gov. Isa Yuguda of Bauchi and Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa.
The deputy governors of Niger and Kaduna State were also at the meeting. (NAN)
