N255m cars: FG begins probe to fish out officials who leaked information

The Ministry of Aviation has set up an “unofficial probe team” to get the identities of those who leaked information on the purchase of two BMW 760 Li HSS cars by Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, Stillonstill.blogspot.com has learnt. The search, it was gathered, has been narrowed down to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). However, staff of other agencies, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), will also be questioned for any possible link. Since the news broke out, several individuals and groups have called for the sack of Ms. Oduah for choosing to stifle an agency which insiders say is cash strapped. But rather than take a stand on what action it intends to take, the presidency has given conflicting reactions. Army begins massive recruitment

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said the army had commenced massive recruitment to tackle the security challenge in the country. Ihejirika said this while opening a five-day seminar organised by the army’s Department of Civil-Military Affairs at the 2 Div. Odogbo, Ibadan on Monday. “I have commenced the recruitment of 9,000 persons in our various training institutions’’, Ihejirika said. The COAS, represented by Maj. Gen. John Ewansiha, said the objective of the seminar was to foster better working relations with civil society organisations toward winning hearts and minds. Nigerians need quality education to secure better future – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday said Nigerians needed qualitative education to secure a better future for the country. Obasanjo spoke at the first graduation of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) where he was conferred with honorary doctorate degrees with three others. He said the country’s youths needed to be well groomed in the areas of sound education as well as unassailable character to hold the position of future leaders. The former president described education as “the most potent instrument to fight poverty as well as best instrument to protect democracy”. Wike, Obuah accused of using President Jonathan’s name against Amaechi

A socio-political group, the Rivers Peoples Forum, has accused the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike and the State’s Chairman of the Peoples Democratic, PDP, Felix Obuah of playing politics with the personality of President Goodluck Jonathan. N255m cars scandal: Falana gives NCAA seven days to provide information on armoured vehicles

Frontline Activist and Lagos lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, has added his voice to the crisis currently rocking the aviation sector. The ace legal practitioner called on the embattled Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, to within seven days release information on the acquisition of the two BMW bulletproof cars it bought for the Minister of Aviation, Ms;. Stella Oduah. Falana further asked that the Managing Director of NCAA, Mr. Fola Akinkuotu to as matter of urgency release the requested information by the virtue of the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. Falana in the letter urged the aviation industry to supply “all the documents relating to the purchase of the cars, including budgetary approval and due process for the entire transaction”. IBB calls for devolution of powers

The former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on Monday called for the devolution of powers between the federal, state and local governments in the spirit of true federalism. Babangida made the call when the Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Chief Elias Mbam, paid him a visit at his residence in Minna. The former president said that besides proper devolution of powers, there was need for a review of revenue sharing formula in favour of the states and the local government councils. He said that a greater percentage of revenue should go to the state and local governments because their closeness to the masses. The former military president also canvassed for diversification of the economy from the current mono-source – oil, to other revenue alternatives.
