Beyonce to be studied as a course in the University

Image
Queen Bee has joined other celebrities including Oprah and husband Jay Z, (who has a Georgetown University sociology course named after him), who are studied in the University. The course is called Politicizing Beyonce and can be taken at Rutgers University in New Jersey. The University’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies will be exploring the social & cultural significance of the songstress’s music and image. The course will allow fans to explore Beyonce's alter ego Sasha Fierce, and debate the extent of control she has over her own image. They will also debate whether her red hot persona is an outlet of female sexual empowerment or merely complying with western gender stereotypes. "This isn’t a course about Beyonce’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend. She certainly pushes boundaries. While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her

Policeman sentenced to death by hanging for killing 20yr old man

Image
Justice has finally come the way of the family of slain Emmanuel Victor (pictured above), a 20 year old young man who was killed in front of his mother by a trigger-happy Policeman, Mathew Egheghe, two years ago in Yenogoa, Bayelsa state. Victor was shot dead after he confronted a group of policemen who were trying to extort money from motorists as he was coming back from church. Angered by his effrontery to question their action, Policeman Egheghe moved close to Victor and shot him at close range. Narrating what happened, Victor's mother Grace, who witnessed the incident said: "They shot my son brutally. As he fell while they were shooting him, the tallest of them still continued shooting him on the ground". She said she was harassed and stopped from going close to her dying son even as he lay gasping for life in the pool of his own blood. Delivering his judgement on the case, Justice Lucky Boufili said that such a cruel act was only punishabl

An attempt by the House of Representatives to amend Section 143 of the constitution, on the removal of the President and his Vice failed on Thursday. The vote of 172 members in favour of the clause, 122 against and three abstinence, could not garner the two-third of the votes of members required to amend the section. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that out of the 19 clauses contained in ‎the report of the ad-hoc committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution, only the impeachment clause did not scale through. The section, which was rejected, provides that the President or his Vice could be removed from office, “ whenever a notice of any allegation in writing, signed by not less than one-third of members of the House of Representatives, is presented to the speaker of the House of Representatives’’. Highlights of the amendments include immunity for lawmakers for words spoken during parliamentary sittings and the removal of the clause that provides that a la

Rivers APC accuses Presidency, Police of disrupting Melaye’s anti-Mbu rally

Image
The All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State Chapter, has accused the Presidency and the Nigerian Police authority of complicity over the brutal disruption of Tuesday’s rally in Abuja, organised by the Anti-Corruption Network, ACN. The protest was held against the alleged impunity being perpetrated in Rivers State by the Police Commissioner, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu. APC said it received the news of the police action with great shock, wondering if the country was still operating a democratic system. A statement issued by Chukwuemeka Eze, media aide to the Interim State Chairman, Davies Iyanya, said, “that the police could brazenly roll out its arsenal and viciously crush a peaceful protest by Nigerian citizens is not only regrettable but also condemnable as it cannot be defended under any circumstances.” “It beats the imagination why the police in the federal capital ruthlessly attacked innocent protesters, including pregnant women a

Obi, who was speaking with stakeholders of the state at Ekwueme Square on Thursday called on the people of the state to remember that one good turn deserved another. “You know, I am a banker, and in the banking industry no one lets you withdraw money from your account no matter how much you have without activating the account. You must pay in something before you can withdraw whatever you wish to. “So what president Jonathan is doing in Anambra today is paying in. He has been supporting us to do the good job I am doing here, and in 2015 it will be time for him to withdraw. All the other people who will come then, we will tell them they cannot withdraw because they have not paid in. “I urge all of you to support him, not when it is 2015, all the other people will

Also, a statement issued by Atiku’s media office in Abuja said the former Vice President noted that his ambition and indeed that of any politician could not be realised in negation to party decisions. “Yes, I may nurse legitimate ambition, but I am not the kind of person who will want to climb the political ladder because an opportunity cheaply presents itself. 2015: Jonathan is not qualified to contest for president – Kwankwaso

Image
As preparations heat up for the 2015 presidential  election, Kano State Governor, Musa Rabiu  Kwankwaso has declared that Jonathan is not  qualified to contest for another presidential election.  According Kwankwaso, any attempt by Jonathan to  run in the next election will amount to third term in  office, which is against the law.  Kwankwaso who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja, Monday, advised President Jonathan to take urgent steps to solve the rising insecurity challenges in the North-East, stabilise Nigerian economy and honourably quit government by 2015. The governor insisted that contrary to Jonathan’s position that his tenure started in 2011, the true position remains that he actually started serving as Nigeria’s President in 2007 and would have completed his eight years in 2015. Describing any third term bid as a taboo, Kwankwaso pointed out that Jonathan and those urging him to run in 2015 could never justify such a move, which runs contrary to the

The Interim Deputy Publicity Secretary of the All  Progressives Congress, APC, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai  was on Monday detained by the State Security  Service, SSS, at its headquarters in Abuja.  The former Minister, who turned in himself at the SSS  office in Maitama, Abuja was however released after  midnight.  “Mallam Nasir El-Rufai left the SSS premises at 12.35a.m today after more than 15 hours,” the former Minister’s media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, tweeted at about 12.40 this morning. It was unclear at the time of filling this report why the interrogation of the erstwhile Minister took that long as both the SSS and El-Rufai were yet to make any official statement. Recall that El-Rufai stormed the SS headquarters at about 9.20am in company of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and Senator Chris Ngige with regard to the invitation he had received for making “a provocative statement.” Other party chieftains, including the APC national secretary, Mr. Tijani Tumsah who also

Amaechi: only a foolish man will vote for Jonathan

Image
Rivers State Governor, Rotimi  Amaechi, yesterday dared the odds,  by visiting the volatile Bori in  Ogoniland.  This comes a week after hoodlums  disrupted his rally, shooting  sporadically into the crowd. Scores  were injured after the attack.   DailyPost had Saturday morning  reported that thugs, armed with  different dangerous weapons are seen loitering around the venue of the Save Rivers Movement rally . We reported that sounds of gunshots were heard by residents as early as 3am. Sources say the action was to scare people away from the event. Speaking at the rally which eventually held under police protection in and around the area, Amaechi blamed the Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu, for allowing militants take up arms against the people. ”The same people (militants) we chased away with the military are back to our state, fuelled by a man called Mbu and his cohorts in Abuja. “They do not mind that your lives are important. They want to sacrifice your lives just t

2015: Peace will return to Nigeria if Jonathan drops his second term ambition – Shuluwa

Image
Elder statesman and one of the pioneers of the crisis- ridden Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abu King  Shuluwa has called on President Goodluck Jonathan  to announce his second term ambition in order to save  the ruling party and the country from further crisis.  Shuluwa observed that the crisis currently rocking the  party had direct links with the general perception that  Jonathan would run for a second term in office. He told newsmen last weekend, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, that “whether we like it or not, the exit of Alhaji Bamaga Tukur as the Chairman of the PDP will not reduce the crisis in the party. “The man was just a sacrificial lamb; the fact is that he was just a victim of circumstance because he was not the problem of the party. “The truth is that, Tukur as chairman was not the reason for the series of problems rocking the PDP today, but President Jonathan. “It all stems from the fact that there is a general perception that he will run in the 2015

The President said, “I am not here to make a formal speech as we have learnt to talk very little. Just like the Bishop said in his sermon, your prayers have been helpful. I request that you continue to pray for this country. Bishop, thank you for your message, it has been very instructive. “As I listened to your message, certain things were being reflected. I assure you, this country will cross the bridge. Yes, we have challenges as a nation. Even th

Northern groups reject 2015 election timetable

Image
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) have rejected the 2015 election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).  According to them, for a credible outcome of the exercise, INEC should conduct all elections on the same day.  INEC had on Friday released the timetable for the general election. The presidential and National Assembly elections were fixed for February 14, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls will hold February 28. Giving their reasons for rejecting the schedule, the groups expressed worry that the electoral umpire put first the presidential election, despite several warnings against such arrangement. ACF in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Anthony Sani said “We are uncomfortable with the sequence of the election. We prefer all elections to hold the same day in order to reduce cost and avoid bandwagon effect.

Is This the Beginning of the End for the Kardashians?

Image
View gallery . Reality TV's first family is back. (E!) Ratings are down. The hate rages strong. Are the Kardashians finally on the way out? While it might seem like a clear yes at first glance, the answer is more complicated. For starters, our feelings about the “Keeping Up With Kardashians” clan, particularly the most famous of the bunch, Kim and her sisters Kourtney, and Khloé, haven't changed much over the years. Kim was the second most-searched for celebrity on Yahoo in 2013 behind Miley Cyrus. And even though folks may loathe them, they're still raking in the dough! [RELATED:  See New Pictures of Baby North West ] “They're just much more well known now than they were back in 2009 or 2010," says Henry Schafer, executive vice president of the  Q Scores Company , which measures the emotional connection between consumers and a changing list of about 1,800 celebrities. Current data, he adds, shows that 65 to 70 percent of Americans age 6 and
