Nelson Mandela death: Gray day in South Africa as news spread

Image
Soweto, South Africa (CNN) -- In a symbol befitting a nation in mourning, a dark gray cloud swept over Johannesburg on Friday as news spread that international icon Nelson Mandela is dead. Under overcast skies that threatened rain any minute, South Africans draped in flags and images of Mandela gathered on the streets to sing and dance. Others wept as they lit candles near his home in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton. Children spelled out "we love you Mandela" on the grass using rocks. Nearby, stuffed animals and flowers sat in a heap. In Soweto township, where Mandela lived before he was thrown into prison for 27 years, giant posters of his face adorned walls. Residents surrounded his former red brick house on the busy street and crooned freedom songs.   Mandela, 95, died Thursday. The former president battled health issues in recent years, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations. "It was a

Burna Boy Barred From UK For 15 Years

Image
There are reports that Nigeria’s pop sensation, Burna Boy’s “uncontrollable” character has cost him a 15 years ban from the United Kingdom.  ‘He can’t be told anything to do, he’s a big boy right now. He won’t just listen anymore, we are frustrated with his actions’.”  his label mates told NET. Burna boy who is presently having issues with his label, Aristokrat,  has not only moved out of the house provided for him by the label in Lekki Phase 1 but he has also extricated himself from them and now handles his career with a former label employee who now only answers to him (Burna). ‘He wants to be in more control of his career’ , they further told the online portal. Well, Burna Boy’s ‘uncontrollable’ mannerism and persona didn’t just start yesterday, a few months ago he allegedly attacked and slapped a ticket attendant  at the Silverbird cinema, Port Harcourt. Also, a while in the UK back in 2010, he was arrested and sent to jail by London Police for alle

I don’t like Obasanjo, I hate his face, but Jonathan should not have issues with him – Dokubo Asari

Image
Leader of the defunct Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, has lambasted president Goodluck Jonathan for openly confronting former president, Olusegun Obasanjo. Dokubo-Asari while speaking at a press conference in Abuja recently declared that Jonathan has no reason whatsoever to disagree with Obasanjo because he manipulated the process that illegally removed Diepreye Alamieyeseigha as governor of Bayelsa State and installed him (Jonathan) as governor. He said that Obasanjo also made Jonathan Vice president, fought for him to become acting president and also fought for him to become president of Nigeria. The former fighter also asserted that it would be difficult for Jonathan to win the presidential election in 2015 if he decides to run based on the poor showing of his administration. He said, “I want to start with an Ijaw proverb, which says: the eyes watched its seven children to death. Instead of advising them, it was just looking at them until they died

The battle between the Federal Government and the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has attained a new intensity following a 7-day ultimatum issued by the Presidency. Some of the striking lecturers have remained adamant despite the obvious waning in the resolve of their members evidenced by the withdrawing of some universities from the strike. The academic body has taken things even further by warning parents not to allow their wards resume in schools to avoid risking the lives of their children. Vanguard  reports : The Presidency, on its part accused ASUU leaders of treachery and warned the university lecturers not to dare the resolve of government to carry out its threat to sack them if they failed to resume.
