Obama praises Jonathan, Nigeria’s economy

Image
The US President, Barack Obama last week Monday had an extensive talk with Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan in New York. Sources in the US had disclosed that the Nigerian President was advised to put his acts together by working towards the realization of the nation’s potential. The 50 minutes meeting, insiders say ended in the most cordial and fruitful way, bringing to rest the sour relationship between the two countries after Obama visited Ghana and refused to reach Nigeria. The Monday meeting which held at the Waldorf Astoria was scheduled to start at 1.45pm to 2.25pm, but however exceeded the fixed time to 2.35pm. Even though details of the meeting, which was also attended by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, the US National Security Adviser, Ms. Susan Rice, Ms. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the new US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, among others were not clearly made available to the press, it was gathered that Jonathan had p

Ohaneze endorses Jonathan for second term

Ohaneze Ndigbo has thrown its weight behind the much speculated second term ambition of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan. In his message to Ndigbo during the Igbo Day celebration at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, on Sunday, Ohaneze President-General, Chief Enwo Igariwey said clamour for Igbo presidency was justifiable. He, however, said it would be realizable after Goodluck Jonathan had served out his tenure either in 2015 or 2019. Igariwey stressed that Ndigbo would not get the presidency by being timid, adding that they must demonstrate some level of seriousness towards the project. According to him, Olusegun Obasanjo’s emergence as Nigeria’s President in 1999 was a result of protest by the Yorubas over the annuled June 12 presidential election. He lamented what he described as “a deliberate act of cheating and intentional exclusion of Ndigbo from a sense of justice and equity”. Igariwey stated that the structural imbalance against Ndigbo in Nigeria h

2015: Governors fail to endorse Jonathan, as Amaechi, Oshiomhole, Okorocha boycott meeting

Image
For the umpteenth time, Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomhole and Rochas Okorocha of Rivers, Edo and Imo States, respectively, have shunned the meeting of the South-East/South-South Governors’ Forum. The last time the group met in Enugu, the three governors were equally absent. Similarly, except the trio, the meeting held at the Enugu Government House on Sunday was attended by all the Governors in the two regions. Those in attendance were Governors Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, Martin Elechi- Ebonyi State, Peter Obi of Anambra State, Theodore Orji- Abia State, Emmanuel Uduaghan- Delta State, Godswill Akpabio- Akwa Ibom State, Liyel Imoke- Cross Rivers State and Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah. However, unlike Ohaneze Ndigbo, which had earlier in the day endorsed President Jonathan for a second term in office, the governors said the masses would decide Nigeria’s president in 2015. In a communique read after t

Nigeria is not an accident or a mistake – Jonathan

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday declared that the amalgamation of Nigeria by Lord Lugard was not a mistake and called for caution on the convocation of sovereign national conference. The President said this on Sunday at the 53rd Independence anniversary Interdenominational Service held at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja. Jonathan said that the 1914 amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates of Nigeria by the then British colonial master, Lord Lugard, was neither an accident nor a mistake. He said that the amalgamation was an act of God designed to bring together the nation’s diversity for positive purposes. “As we look up to our Centenary celebration, there are quite a number of questions people ask themselves. “People asked, may be Lord Lugard made a mistake to amalgamate the Northern and Southern parts of the country. “This informed why some talk about sovereign national conference and so on and so forth. “But those who are Christians

I did not have any agreement to serve only one term – Jonathan

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday affirmed that he never made any agreement with anybody that he would not run for the 2015 presidential election. The president also denied signing an agreement with some Peoples Democratic Party governors for only one term in office, contrary to the continuous claim by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and other PDP aggrieved governors. The president affirmed that if an agreement was signed with regard to 2015 election, it must have been presented by those talking about it. Jonathan stated this while fielding questions from a panel of journalists during the Presidential Media Chat in Abuja on Sunday. Asked if he would contest the 2015 election, the President maintained that it was too early for him to decide since such was capable of disrupting the political system. He emphasized that declaration of interest to run or otherwise will generate so much turmoil , hence the need to remain silent over it, and conti

How I escaped death in Kenya mall attack - Wole Soyinka

Image
But for a stroke of luck, Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, would have been among the dead in the terror attack that took place at the Nairobi Westgate mall in Kenya last weekend. Speaking at a press conference at the Freedom Park, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday in honour of the late Ghanaian poet, Professor Kofi Awoonor who died in the attack, Soyinka led a group of eminent Nigerian writers to condemn the Nairobi massacre. Soyinka, who said he, like Awoonor, was invited to the Storymoja/ Hay Literature Festival, said he couldn’t attend because of other pressing engagements he had elsewhere. “My absence was particularly regrettable, because I had planned to make up for my failure to turn up for the immediate prior edition. Participant or absentee however, this is one edition we shall not soon forget,” said Soyinka. The iconic writer said, considering his close relationship with Awoonor, he might have been at the same place with him and could
