Landlord in court for allegedly stealing tenant’s property

The police on Thursday arraigned a landlord, Orisa Obi, in a Life Camp Magistrates’ Court for breaking into a female tenant’s apartment and stealing property valued at N1.5 million.

Obi, 46, of 37 Road, Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja, is facing two counts of house-breaking and theft.
The police prosecutor, Sgt. Salihu Mohammed, said the tenant, Miss Esther Akpata, reported the matter at Gwarimpa Divisional Police Station on Sept. 2.

Mohammed alleged that the accused broke into his tenant’s apartment and stole N200,000, one I-Pad, four water dispensers, one DSTV decoder and trinkets, among others, all valued at N1.5 million.

The prosecutor said Obi also destroyed Akpata’s television set, a TV stand, refrigerator, a microwave and tore her underclothes.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 353 and 287 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, the accused person can be sentenced to seven years in prison or be given an option to pay a fine or both.

Obi pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The magistrate, Mr Zubairu Mohammed, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.

He ordered that the surety must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court and a civil servant of not below salary grade level 8.

Mohammed adjourned the case to Sept. 17 for hearing. (NAN)
