19 injured in Gombe as Police, Marshals clash

Information available to DailyPost from Gombe state says that Nineteen Traffic Marshals, working for the State government had on Tuesday engaged in a heavy clash with some policemen in the state, resulting to various degrees of injuries as sustained by the Marshals.

General Manager of the Gombe State Agency for Social Services and Other Related Matters, Mr Babaji Dunama disclosed this in an interview in Gombe, the state capital.

He said that the confrontation followed a misunderstanding that ensued between the police and the marshals at the Cross Roundabout in the city of Gombe.

The marshals are made up of youth, employed by the State Government to perform various roles for the government. Some of their roles include occasional control of traffic and enforcement of environmental sanitation laws.

Dunama had allegedly disclosed that the marshals were attacked by the police while they were on duty.
He said he was equally threatened by the Police when he told the policemen to stop harassing the young men.

He disclosed that the problem degenerated, shortly after he left the scene as the policemen beat up the marshals on duty.

Dunama further stated that policemen also invaded his office after the encounter with the Marshals and beat almost every Marshal seen around his office.

He alleged that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Gombe Command, Mr Baba Yola, was behind the attack as they have been having series of issues with him all the while.

He complained that the 19 injured marshals were also whisked away by the police.
He stated that the intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Kudu Nma, led to the release of the marshals, but on bail.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Gombe State Police Command, Mr. Fwaje Atajiri, said that two policemen from the Gombe Police Division were sent to invite some persons suspected to have committed some offence, but allegedly refused to comply leading to a heated argument.

He said, it was not known earlier that the suspect was a Marshal, affirming that the clash could not have occurred if the police had known that the suspect was a marshal.

The PPRO however denied that policemen in eight vehicles attacked some marshals in the Ministry of Youth and Poverty Alleviation.
